Mr. Robert A. Young, PE, LEED AP
I am the director of the Historic Preservation Program at the Uiversity of Utah College of Architecture + Planning. My research area is "Stewardship of the Buiilt Environment" which explores the reuse and retention of the built environment as a means of enhancing sustainability.
I have masters degrees in Historic Preservation, Business Administration, and Architectural Engineering and a baccaluareate degree in Civil Engineering. After 13 years of professional practice in southeastern Michigan, I joined the University of Utah in 1993 where I have taught a broad spectrum of courses that enable students to integrate technical concepts and strategies into their studio designs. My teaching focus is on historic preservation, environmental controls, and sustainability.
I draw upon my education and professional practice experience to engage in teaching and service activities that enable me to synthesize and communicate information between several disciplines, owners, practioners, and the genreal public. As such, I have served on numers civic and private boards including the Salt Lake City Historic Landmarks Commission (including a term as chair), the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Authority Advisory Committee, the Utah Heritage Foundation(state-wide preservation advoacy non-profit organization), ASSIST (a community planning and design assistance non-profit organinzation), and other municipal and university planning and design review committees. In 2007, I was awarded the Utah Heritage Foundation's Lucybeth Rampton Award for my preservation advocacy efforts. In 2008, I was awarded the University of Utah Distinguished Service Professorship.
My professional service also includes extensive work with the Association for Preservation Technology International(APT) where I have served on the Board of Directors, several technical committees and publication committees. In 2008 I was awarded an APT Presidential Citation for my contributions and efforts. I also am a cofounder of the Traditional Building Skills Institute and served as a board member (and one term as Chair) for 12 years. I currently am on their advisory board.
I am the author of Historic Preservation Technology (Wiley, 2008) which is used as a textbook and professional reference for those involved in architecture, planning, and historic preservation activities.
